　　As bacteriologist Lena (38) drives past a burning car, she hears a scream of a dying woman. Lena does not tell her boyfriend how much the incident distresses her, just as she does not talk about the stillbirth she recently had. Instead, she throws herself into her work, intrudes into the life of the deceased, begins an affair with the widower and gradually takes on the role of mother to their son. Her persistent insomnia causes her to lose control between dreams and reality. Finally she accepts the help of a whisperer and then finds her own way to cope with her loss

　　公元2020年，云集了无数顶尖科学家的世界空间站（World Space Station）正在进行一项载人飞船火星登陆计划。由卢克·格莱姆（Don Cheadle 饰）率领的4人小组成功抵达这颗无人星球，他们在此发现一些奇怪景象，随后小组成员也接连毙命。为了调查这起悲剧 的原因并寻找可能的生还者，空间站派出伍迪·布雷克（蒂姆·罗宾斯 Tim Robbins 饰）率领的救援小组前往火星。　　然而救援小组也遭遇诸多磨难，船体损坏、机器失灵、燃料泄漏、成员死亡等等，无一不在消磨着救援人员的斗志。抵达火星后，布雷克他们找到了卢克船长，继而发现亿外年前外星人留在火星上的遗迹和信息，这一切都与人类有着千丝万缕的关系……
